Working title:
Three Essays on the Determinants of Radicalization - A Case of North-Western Pakistan
Supervisor:
Prof. Dr. Marcel Thum, TU Dresden, Faculty of Business and Economics
Abstract:
While radicalization continue to flare across the world, empirical evidence and consensus regarding its determinants remain scarce. Radicalization research predominantly focuses on the biographies of the agents of violence for distilling causal mechanisms innate to individual psychology or cognitive function, thereby impeding a broader investigation into the external contextual factors and social processes. This cumulative dissertation, based on three papers, aims to go beyond the individual level approach and undertake a broader study for understanding the determinants of radicalization. The first paper will undertake an in-depth review of the existing literature on radicalization for identifying the potentially contributing factors. These will be empirically tested in the second paper through primary data that will be collected by conducting a household survey in the north-western region of Pakistan. Some parts of this region are marginalized and economically backward as they deviate from their potential development due to floods, earthquakes, wars and distributional policies. The influence of these factors on radicalization will be investigated in the third paper by using satellite data as well as secondary data on economic indicators
