Doctoral Thesis

Arbeitstitel:
Anpassungsfähigkeit von Quartieren der 1950/60er Jahre in Hannover

Working title:
Adaptive capacity of the 1950/60s multi-storey row housing stock in Hannover

Supervisor:  Prof. Dr. Jürg Sulzer

Abstract:
Aged buildings, small flats and outdated equipment contrast with good locations of the 1950/60s multi-storey row housing stock. This stock comprises much of the overall housing stock, especially in West Germany. Building modernization, neighborhood upgrading and functional loss go along with a changing household and age structure as well as rising shares of people with a migration background. The research investigates the variables relevant for this specific building type with regard to tranformation and adaption.
A mixed method case study is undertaken in the West German city of Hannover. First, a cartographic analysis is used in order to identify and typify the relevant housing stock. Second, a cluster analysis is applied to distinguish demographic patterns within the period of 1985 to 2011 on the scale of the statistical block. On this basis, five heterogeneous cases are chosen for in-depth qualitative investigation. Expert interviews, field observation, as well as data on the building modernization status and ownership allow to identify typical transformation processes of multi-storey row housing.
The dissertation adresses transformation processes of demographic and building modernization patterns for one specific building type. It contributes to the differentiation of existing phase models for multi-storey row housing. The dissertation provides recommendations on how to adapt the multi-storey row housing stock of the 1950/60s.
