Doctoral Thesis
Working title:
The relationship between different residential building types and household’s socioeconomic status on the energy consumption in the residential sector.
The case of Santiago de Chile
Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Müller
Abstract:
Chilean energy production is highly dependent on imported fossil fuels for generation. The residential sector accounted for 24.4% of the country's annual energy consumption in 2008. It has been the focus of energy efficiency measures, implemented primarily through thermal regulations in the National Building Code. Greater Santiago has been chosen for a case study because private developers working in the sector have shown a growing interest in implementing energy efficiency measures voluntarily. The aim of the study is to develop an explanatory model to understand what factors influence private developers' motivations for applying energy efficiency measures in Greater Santiago de Chile.
This case study uses a mixed-methods sequential design. Firstly, companies currently offering energy efficient buildings are identified using web-based information. Secondly, private developers are invented on their motivations for pursuing energy efficiency in their housing development projects beyond the requirements of existing building regulations. Thirdly, energy efficiency simulations are run using dimensions and building materials to verify the efficiency of the buildings on offer.
The results will provide a better understanding of why, how, and to what extend private developers apply energy efficient measures. This knowledge may allow researchers, managers, and policy makers to promote the construction of more energy efficient housing as a path towards reducing CO˛ emissions.
