Doctoral Thesis
Working title:
Urban Renewal in the Traditional Center of a Megacity: A Case Study in Dhaka, Bangladesh
Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Bernhard Müller
Abstract:
South and South East Asian city cores are often the most densely populated areas with very important business and industrial zones of the cities. They are generally characterized by poor housing and living conditions, inadequate urban services and deteriorating physical environment but also by buildings of heritage value. In this context, the research focuses on urban renewal in addressing urban blight in the historical city core of Dhaka.
The analysis employs a qualitative and exploratory research design using a single case study, a small street called Shankhari Bazar in Old Dhaka. Information is collected by means of semi structured interviews and group discussion with different stakeholders, participant observation, mapping, and review of legal documents. The information is used to understand the perspective of different stakeholders, including spatial planning response to the problem, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of such a traditional urban settlement.
The results are expected to reveal the attributes and driving forces of urban blight in Old Dhaka as well as considerations for urban renewal program and implementation strategies to improve the quality of life in Old Dhaka. It is also expected to contribute to the knowledge on urban renewal in South Asian context.
